To continue using my dear Blackstrap rum I was thinking about some options or twists where I could use this kind of rum.
Three Dots and a Dash
Reading the Beachbum Berry’s Sippin’ Safari I found an interesting classic tiki drink: Three Dots and a Dash.
Palito de Ron
In my recent visit to Ron Montero Distillery they share with us a recipe created by their founder Francisco Montero: the Palito de Ron.
Visiting the Ron Montero Distillery
At the beginning of this month I travelled to the south of Spain, more specifically to Motril, a sub-tropical climate region at the foothills of Sierra Nevada, near of Granada. The reason of this travel was visiting the last active distillery in Europe, the one who was founded by Francisco Montero Martin 51 years ago. Actually, Joaquin Martín Montero, nephew of Francisco Montero, and his daughter Andrea Martín Targa manages the Ron Montero distillery.
Blackstrap Special
This recipe is my own twist of a drink of the 50s: the Bourbon Special, featured at Steve Crane’s Kon-Tiki restaurant chain. This tiki drink was created for Bourbon drinkers…and I used it like inpiration to make a drink based on the Cruzan Blackstrap Rum, a totally black colored rum with a strong flavour of molasses and liquorice. I love that rum combined with ginger beer, and I think that this recipe with some modifications could work…and I think that I wasn’t wrong.
Trader Vic’s Grog
Today i’m going to talk about a cocktail of one of the fathers of the tiki drinks: Victor Bergeron, also known as Trader Vic.
I chugged this drink for the first time at Tahití Bar in Barcelona and I loved it. Searching in my cocktail books, I found the recipe on Beachbum Berry Remixed and in Trader Vic’s Bartender Guide Revised, but I prefer the Berrys’ book recipe which used passion fruit syrup instead of passion fruit nectar of the Vic’s book.
Coca-Cola VS Fentimans Curiosity Cola
In the actual market we can find a lot of new and premium mixers for our drinks, and if we think in rum, the most popular mixer in which we think is cola. The most popular brand of cola used in the Rum&Cola, of course is Coke (Coca-Cola in Spain), but I llove to try new brands and give the opportunity to different flavours. We never know where we can find a better product!!!
Colonel Beach’s Plantation Punch
Searching something to drink in my small library of tiki drinks books, I took the Beachbum Berry Remixed of the master Jeff Berry, the real bible of tiki recipes. I was looking for a drink with ginger beer, because I had a bottle of Fentiman’s opened and I want to finish it…
Corn & Oil
The Corn & Oil is one of my favourite rummy drinks. It’s a typical Bajan drink made with rum, falernum, bitters and fresh lime juice, but the proportions of each and the exact ingredients are not clear, it has many variations. It’s a bit like a Ti’ Punch…you could do it at your taste (“Chacun prépare sa propre mort”).
Authentic Caribbean Rum Certification Programme – Part 2
In the practice session we first taste the rums neat, and later we taste how it works in some cocktails.
