After the four rounds of the competition (Make the most Mai Tais, Most Garish Garnish, Tropical Trivia!, Secret box ingredient) the judges decided that the $1000 are for Jason Alexander, and Felix  Fernandez and Marie King shares the second place and wins $250 each. Iron TikiTender – A tropical bartending competition

The Iron TikiTender is a LIVE tropical bartending competiton to be held on July 12th of 2014 during Tiki Kon in Vancouver, WA.

Only three finalists will be selected for the LIVE competition between all the recipes received of bartenders and amateurs,and compete for a 1000$ prize. The submitted recipes only have the requirement of include at least one of the sponsors ingredients: DonQ Rum, Appleton Estate, Coruba and B.G. Reynolds’ Syrups.

Visiting the Ron Montero Distillery

rm1At the beginning of this month I travelled to the south of Spain, more specifically  to Motril, a sub-tropical climate region at the foothills of Sierra Nevada, near of Granada. The reason of this travel was visiting the last active distillery in Europe, the one who was founded by Francisco Montero Martin 51 years ago. Actually, Joaquin Martín Montero, nephew of Francisco Montero, and his daughter Andrea Martín Targa manages the Ron Montero distillery.

Blackstrap Special

bs1 This recipe is my own twist of a drink of the 50s: the Bourbon Special, featured at Steve Crane’s Kon-Tiki restaurant chain. This tiki drink was created for Bourbon drinkers…and I used it like inpiration to make a drink based on the Cruzan Blackstrap Rum, a totally black colored rum with a strong flavour of molasses and liquorice. I love that rum combined with ginger beer, and I think that this recipe with some modifications could work…and I think that I wasn’t wrong.
