UK Rumfest 2014 : Experiential suites, Masterclasses and Guiness World Record Attempt

The UK Rumfest returns this 11th and 12th of October with over 400 of the more rare and diverse rums from across the globe. Features will again include seminars hosted by industry aficionados, a main stage with  food from all over the world as well main stage presentations, holiday giveaways and live music and dancing.

The 2014 edition has some news:

-An extended timetable from 12 to 6pm (last pours at 6pm).

-Brand experience suites.

-Friday evening boutique trade & press event.

-“The tasting suite – A taste of…”

The timetables of the Experiential suites and the masterclasses are the following:

Experiential Suites:

*El Dorado

El Dorado have their own seminar room and will be running masterclasses throughout both days. They are paid masterclasses.

Schedule of Talks for – each to last 1 hour approx

Saturday

1pm – El Dorado Single Barrel Tasting. Come and taste the single barrel offerings from El Dorado, featuring unblended rums from the World’s only Wooden stills as well as the 15 & 21yo rums (£10 – or 2 golden tot tokens)

3pm – The El Dorado 25 Year Old Tasting. A tasting of the 12yo, 15yo, 21yo & very rare 25yo rums. This vintage rum was distilled in 1986, and blended by the late George Robinson of DDL. (£20 or 4 golden tot tokens)

5pm – El Dorado Sipping Rums (8yo, 12yo, 15yo & 21yo) paired with meats & cheeses. Come and taste each rum matched with 2 different foods. (£10 – or 2 golden tot tokens)

Sunday

1pm – El Dorado Sipping Rums (8yo, 12yo, 15yo & 21yo) paired with meats & cheeses. Come and taste each rum matched with 2 different foods. (£10 – or 2 golden tot tokens)

There will be five ½ hour sessions per day.

Seminar Rooms 1

12:30 -13:15 – Mount Gay

Miguel Smith, International Brand Ambassador , will guide you through the rich history and heritage of Mount Gay Rums.
Participants will have the opportunity to touch, taste and smell the signature aromas of the oldest, most storied rum, climaxing with a full tasting of the entire range, including the newly released Mount Gay Black Barrel.

13.45-14.30 – Angostura

Distilling and Aging Angostura Rums presented by John Georges.

Join Angostura’s John Georges – their master Distiller. As he takes you through the distilling at Angostura, the configuration of the stills and some of the operating parameters. He will also cover aging and some of the techniques that have been adopted to achieve the flavours in Angostura rums. Finally he’ll go through the Angostura Flavour Wheel and the Rum Map that Ian Burrell developed for Angostura.

 15:00 -15:45 –  Naval Style Rums – Black Tot & Pussers

Martin Cates hosts a seminar discussing the history of rum & the Royal Navy. Join Jon Lister who will be sampling the exclusive Black Tot Rum followed by Pussers and a some very special guests who will share their experiences with you.

16.15 – 17.00 – Mahiki Cocktail Masterclass – hosted by Georgi Radev

Georgi Radev from London Mayfairs famous Mahiki Club will be taking people on a Tiki journey of discovery. He will talk about the history of the Tiki cocktail from the old favourites to the new cocktails that Mahiki have made so popular with their 21st century twists – including the classic Zombie – and the Mahiki favourite The Honolulu Honey.

12.45 -13:30 – Rococo Chocolates & Rum

Famous chocolatiers Rococo Chocolates and Global Rum Ambassadors Ian Burrell host a glorious Rum & Chocolate pairing. Rum & Chocolate – What a heavenly combination.

14:00 – 14.45 – Diplomatico

15:15 – 16:00 – Havana Club

Havana Club invites you to a unique seminar with our Master Blender Don Morales who will bring to life the craft of making an extraordinary premium rum – Havana Club Selección de Maestros – linking the art of rum-making with the rich Cuban culture.

16.30 – 17.15 – Ron Botran

This seminar will be focused on our Guatemala DOP (Denominación de Origen Protegida). We are going to talk about the different families of rums especially about guatemalean rums and Botran. There are not many countries that have a DOP today in our Rum industry. We have the rums agricoles from the French Antillas, we have some rums from Venezuela, and we have two rums from Guatemala.

Join the UK BACARDI Brand Ambassador, Shervene Shahbazkhani for an introduction to the white rum category, a style that is often over shadowed by age. Participate in a comparison of Spanish, English and French Styles and discover why it is the backbone of this family-owned rum.

15:00 -15:45 –  Cachaça Tasting

Peter Holland chairs an introduction to three very popular Cachaças. Leblon, Abelha & Germana. Leblons tasting will be led by Carlos Oliveira – Master Distiller and Rui Teixeira – Brand Ambassador and Hal Stockely from Abelha.

16.15 – 17.00 – Ron Botran

Back due to popular demand Global Rum Ambassador hosts this unforgettable masterclass.  A Rum Adventure with Ian Burrell.

UK Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell guides you through a unique tasting of rare rums, matched with specially created marshmallows from confectioners extraordinaire, The Marshmallowists.

14:00 – 14.45 – Agricoles

Rhum Agricole – Rhum Clement.

The world of rum is beautifully diverse, influenced by tradition and culture. Rhum Agricole is made from sugarcane juice (instead of molasses) with distillation mimicking the expertise of Cognac and Armagnac. Learn more with Audrey Bruisson from Rhum Clément and Emilie Campesato of Amathus.

15:15 – 16:00 – Richard Seale

Richard Seale, Master Distiller of Foursquare in Barbados, one of the most respected and innovative distillers in the Caribbean, will be testing you on your rum knowledge.  Like its pirated seas, rum is unpredictable and surprising.  So without wanting to reveal too much, we can guarantee that you will leave his presentation enlightened but also eager to discover more about the secrets of the rum world.

16.30 – 17.15 – Plantation – Alexandre Gabriel

Alexandre Gabriel, owner and master distiller at Plantation Rum producer, Cognac Ferrand, will be presenting his latest creations including the infamous Plantation Pineapple, 98 Jamaican Tokai and single cask rums produced exclusively for Rum Kitchen & Gerry’s. He will discuss Plantations recent medal accolades at Rum XP in Miami.

And remember, the Thursday 9th October 2014, Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell invites rum fans to become official record breakers, hosting the world’s largest rum tasting with hundreds of rum enthusiasts coming together to sample six esteemed rums from across the globe.

Representing Jamaica, Appleton’s Rum will be sipped and savoured with commentary from revered Master Blender, Joy Spence, whilst the Spanish style of rum, Don Q will be sipped and savoured with a yet to be announced speaker. For a historical twist Pusser’s Navy Rum will be presented by George Freegard and Peter Thornton. Angostura will bring a taste of Trinidad to the evening hosted by Master Distiller John Georges and the delights of Cuban’s classic Havana Club will be a part of the World Record Attempt with one final rum to be announced in the coming weeks.

Doors will open at 5pm where guests will be greeted with a welcome speech from Global Rum Ambassador and RumFest founder Ian Burrell, followed by an introduction to the rules and regulations of the Guinness World Records. From 6.30pm the world record attempt will begin as guests taste the six rums from some of the world’s most revered rum distilleries followed by an audience Q&A and the presentation of the Guinness World Records certificate.
